Why don’t pigs fly?

“Why don’t Pigs fly” is just a quirky little series I created – mostly for my own amusement – and I have to say, I truly enjoy it!

So how did this idea start? Well, I was born in 1971, and 2019 was the Year of the Pig, and therefore it is quite literally my Year! I have been so abundantly blessed this year, that I wanted to commemorate it with a very personal series. This, 2019, is my first year of doing art full time, and it has been an incredible journey thus far.

The series consist of six different piglets, each one christened with a different personality trait of mine. Every pig is finding a different way to make it possible for them to fly. Like the pigs, we also try to find ways to fly despite the obvious obstacles we face. The heaviness of the pigs are juxtaposed against the lichtness of the wings.

They are each carved on lino, printed on my press (which I generously received as a birthday gift from my partner) and then hand painted with acrylic ink to complete them. I made references in the embossing to the Chinese calendar origin, which serves as decoration.

I have also made some bronze sculptures from these sketches, and they are adoreable!!
